We now come to the practical section in our study of the Book of Romans. It deals with the basics of Christian living. The first part of Romans is about what to believe. The second part is about how to behave. Paul is teaching that sound doctrine always leads to sound living.

In Romans 12, Paul says, “Therefore, I urge you…” One of the principles of the interpretation of Scripture is whenever you see a “therefore” you look for what it’s there for. Paul is saying, in the light of everything we have talked about now this is the way you ought to live. There are four great “therefores” in the book of Romans.

  • Romans 3:20 - The “therefore” of Sin
  • Romans 5:1 - The “therefore” of Salvation
  • Romans 8:1 – The “therefore” of Security
  • Romans 12:1-2 – The “therefore” of Service

“Therefore I urge you brothers, in view of God’s mercies, offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God which is your spiritual worship. Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Therefore you will be able to test and prove what God’s will is, His good, pleasing and perfect will.”

The point that Paul is making is that the true tests of my beliefs is my behavior.
